I am using a Windows XP computer. Yesterday evening, a small window appeared on my desktop stating that an update of F-Prot is in progress and that I will be prompted to reboot once the installation is at that point. Before that window appeared, the F-Prot icon disappeared from my systray in the lower right hand corner of my desktop. So, I assumed F-Prot was no longer running on my computer. In that small update window was a horizontal bar that kept refilling from left to right. After this small window continued for about 2 hours without changing, I rebooted the computer. Once I rebooted, the same thing happened over again - that small update window appeared again and it was still there after several more hours.
I then went to my Customer Zone on the FProt web page and manually downloaded fpav-windows-x86-hc-en-6.0.9.1.msi and installed it. After rebooting, I now have two FProt icons in my systray. One of them has a little yellow diamond in it. When I click on the FProt icon without the diamond, it shows I am running version 6.0.9.1. Also, a red shield with an X appears in my systray. When I click on it, it shows that FProt is out of date.
1) How do I get rid of the second FProt icon with a diamond in it?
2) How do I get rid of the red shield with an X in it?
3) Is FProt running okay and is it up to date even though I have two FProt icons in my systray and the red diamond shows that FProt is out of date?
Thanks.

There is already a complete thread dedicated to the problem: http://forum.f-prot.com/index.php/topic,1128.msg6639.html

To cut a long story short

Install the latest version
Restart
keep on installing
Restart

Do the update (can take long)
Restart

Do an update again (this time it will say there are no updates present)

This sometimes does the trick.
Otherwise kill FPAVTRAY and FPAVSERVER and do a restart

Felix,
Thanks for your response. As I mentioned in my first post in this thread, I did a manual update (install) and was left with 2 FProt icons in my systray. Also in the systray was the red shield icon with an X in it, indicating that FProt needed to be updated. Then, within an hour after I installed the update, the red shield icon and one of the two FProt icons disappeared from my systray. So, now I am assuming that just manually installing the update did the trick. We'll see. Smiley

I too started having this problem yesterday.  I have three computers in F-Prot limbo right now. Can someone from F-Prot please acknowledge that they are looking into this issue?

I have the same exact problem with the 2 icons and the security alert. I also downloaded and installed the latest version and rebooted 100 times... Roll Eyes Still the same.

Tech Support is saying that the definition update problems are related to the problem began yesterday 9 July with the lengthy and repeating "update in progress" msg.

I have tried this morning to update defs, after installing the new version, but they keep failing.

This was especially scary to me as it followed immediately the new ZoneAlarm problem with Microsoft's  KB951748 problem from their latest update.

They are working in it...

We're also having this same problem on our 5 PC's - 2 are running Windows Server 2003, the others Windows XP SP2.  We tried rebooting, upon restart we get the error "...FPAVServer.exe is not online..." so we go in and start the service manually, which is weird because the service has been to automatically start after a reboot.  Anyhow, we're doing a manual scan on all the PC's before trying to install the lastest version of F-PROT 6.0......

This case is solved now, no? To finish explaining, which is probably in a few other threads already, the auto-update from 6.0.8.0 to 6.0.9.1 seemed to behave badly on a handful of user's systems. It actually proved to be quite a handful, but we have a solution to this now.

By manually upgrading to 6.0.9.1, i.e. downloading and executing just from our website link does solve the matter. Contact support@f-prot.com if this proves non-effective and we then have the longer version to tailor-fit you Smiley
